Some terms you might find useful
Vermeil
Heavy gold plating over sterling silver core.  Different karat golds give different colors and will tarnish like sterling silver.

Gold-plate
Thin layer of gold plating over a base metal shape.

14kt Gold-fill
A thin layer of gold is bonded to brass, then milled (like sterling silver) into wire, chains and gold findings.






Care and Cleaning

With proper care, gold-fill, vermeil and gold-plate are very long lasting.  Avoid exposing your jewelry to chemicals such as hairspray, moisturizer and cleaning products.

Never use abrasives on vermeil, gold-plate or gold-fill.  Liquid dips and soft polishing cloths are best for cleaning.
